(Digital ITE, BTE, and CIC Hearing Instruments)
There has typically been a great deal of
confusion about different types of hearing aids. Below is a simple description of
the different types of hearing aids.
The two primary features of any hearing aid are
the style and circuit.
Style: A way of talking about the
size of an instrument. Styles from largest to smallest include: BTE - Behind
the Ear, ITE - In the Ear, ITC - In the Canal, and CIC - Completely in the Canal
Circuit: The circuit in a hearing
aid is what processes and amplifies the sound. Numerous analog and digital circuit
options are now available. There are hundreds of different circuit options, but the
following is a useful list of the major categories from simple to most advanced:
Linear, Compression, DPA or digitally programmable analog, and DSP or digital signal
processing.
